A trip to New York will teach you, if nothing else, how to layer and protect yourself from the chilliest of winds. Living in Atlanta, I’ve been lucky enough to get by with the bare minimum in terms of layering. Fall here in the south, should be renamed “extended summer,” because we only experience weather suitable for heavy coats around December; and if we’re bound for a good winter, January is the time for thoughtful bundling. Thankfully, my NYC visit was during a breezy weekend, as I was able to exercise my layering muscles. Although, at the time I complained endlessly about the low temperatures, the ramification is my discovering of the perfect combination for this season. No matter where on the globe you reside, mixing these pieces together guarantees you a look that is both effortless and stylish. Unless you live in the islands or a similar location where cold weather is merely a tall tale, these rules need not apply. In such a case, you’ll still look amazing, but you will probably suffer from a dehydration via heat stroke.
According to my sartorial calculations, the secret to the perfect autumn ensemble is a mixture of light layers in breathable fabrics, warm, earthy tones, and prints that are also neutral in color. Obviously, a black bootie is imperative; the look comes together with a pair on your soles. Statement socks are a major trend this year, one that I’m totally obsessed with (instagram proof), and you should be too. The shimmery, copper style here makes for subtle contrast against black boots, and fuses well with the color palette.
Feel free to try a few variations of this combo. It’s your fool-proof guide to dressing well all season long.
